Professor Gillian Mezey


Professor of Forensic Psychiatry and Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist, St Georges University of London and St Georges and South West London NHS Mental Health Trust

Professor Mezey is a Professor of Forensic Psychiatry based at St Georges University of London and a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist within the NHS based in London, based at Springfield University Hospital in South London. Clinically, she has responsibility for male inpatients in a medium secure psychiatric unit, and for carrying out community and outpatient consultations. She has expertise in the assessment and treatment of individuals with severe mental illness, personality disorder and psychological  trauma. She is approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act. She is a recognised expert on psychological trauma and specifically the psychiatric effects of domestic and sexual violence (including domestic homicide). Her publications include:  4 textbooks (Male Rape; Psychological Trauma; Violence against Women) and over 70 peer reviewed research publications. Current research is focussed on social exclusion and  stigma experienced by individuals with mental health problems.
