Dr Gwen Adshead

Gwen Adshead is a Forensic Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist. She trained at St George’s hospital, the Institute of Psychiatry and the Institute of Group Analysis. She worked as a Consultant Forensic Psychotherapist at Broadmoor Hospital for over 15 years, where she ran psychotherapeutic groups for offenders, and worked with staff and organisational dynamics. Dr Adshead also has a Masters’ Degree in Medical Law and Ethics; and has a research interest in moral reasoning, and how this links with ‘bad’ behaviour. She has published a number of books ; and over 100 papers, book chapters and commissioned articles on forensic psychotherapy, ethics in psychiatry, and attachment theory as applied to medicine and forensic psychiatry. She has appeared on Radio 4 on a number of different programmes and been involved with public lectures and presentations at the Wellcome Trust. She was a visiting professor at Yale in 2013 and is currently the Gresham Professor of Psychiatry. She has acted as an expert witness for over 20 years; principally in the criminal and family courts. She has a particular interest in factitious disorder in mothers, personality disorder and offending, and homicide within the family. She currently works at a medium secure unit in Hampshire.
